Senior Manager, Tax



We are looking for a talented Senior Manager of Tax to join our Finance team at Corus Orthodontists. We acquire, integrate and elevate orthodontic practices in Canada and the U.S. with a presence in 15 states and 5 provinces currently. About the Role:


Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), your core responsibilities will be spearheading tax planning, compliance, and reporting, while leading the dynamic tax aspects of M&A and strategic planning. This role promises a diverse scope and everyday will be different, including extending to other corporate areas such as ICFR and Treasury. If you’re eager to take the reins as the driving force behind the Canadian and U.S. tax function for our thriving organization, providing essential tax support to over 50 practices (and growing!), then this role was made for you. This position is a full-time, permanent position based in Calgary, Alberta or Toronto, Ontario (Hybrid).

What you will be doing – key responsibilities:


  • Lead a team of 2 tax managers, one in Canada and one in the U.S., and external advisors to oversee tax planning, reporting, and compliance as well as their evolution driven by changes in our operating model
  • Oversee mergers and acquisition (M&A) tax diligence and structuring
  • Prepare and execute strategic planning to mitigate/minimize our tax risk and liability
  • Maintain our Canadian and U.S. income and indirect tax compliance, financial statement reporting and audit activities
  • Develop and implement robust internal processes and documentation to support the tax function, including executing on opportunities to leverage technology
  • Oversee and monitor cash tax forecasting and analysis including cash repatriation and cross-border taxation policies and processes
  • Collaborate and coordinate with senior leaders across the organization as a valued and strategic business resource
  • Monitor legislative tax developments and assess their impact on the company
  • Opportunity to extend to other corporate areas such as ICFR and aspects of treasury depending on your experience and capabilities


About you:

  • CPA/CA designation with a minimum of 7 years tax experience in a firm and/or industry
  • Demonstrated expertise in the tax field as evidenced by hands-on experience and advanced tax training such as the In-Depth Tax program
  • Corporate tax experience dealing with organizations operating in Canada and the U.S., experience with transfer pricing, application of treaties and cross border tax planning
  • Financial reporting and compliance experience, with strong knowledge of tax accounting principles
  • Experience with M&A activity and tax due diligence procedures specifically
  • Proven capability to manage Canadian and US income tax filings directly or with the use of third parties
  • Demonstrated ability to think broadly, think through issues, consider options and propose practical solutions to optimize tax positions
  • A continuous learning mindset with a desire to stay on top of tax technical changes in Canada and the U.S.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple competing priorities
  • Ability to take initiative and ownership of challenges and opportunities and see them through to resolution
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively with all levels of employees
  • Experience with engaging and managing external tax advisors efficiently and effectively
  • Strong presentation and communication skills with the ability to communicate complex tax concepts in plain language
