Job Summary:

This role is considered Hybrid, which means the employee will work 2-3 days onsite at a Company designated location and occasionally from home.


Position Summary:

We are looking for a Senior Look Development Technical Director who reflects the innovative spirit, creative talent, production excellence, collaborative mindset, and passion for great filmmaking that define ILM. Senior Look Development Technical Directors produce high-quality look dev and shading for our CG Assets, needing only initial direction and guidance from their Supervisors.

What You’ll Do:

  1. Design and create the lighting and the look of computer-generated objects and scenes
  2. Works closely with Lighting Supervisors, Lookdev Supervisors, and CG Supervisors to determine the best approach to solving CG challenges and developing the final look
  3. Creates efficient rendering setups in order to optimize render farm usage
  4. Stays on schedule and meets set deadlines while maintaining the highest level of work quality
  5. Ensures there is ongoing communication with Production and Leads regarding schedules and deadlines
  6. Helps mentor Junior Artists within the Lighting/Look Dev team
  7. Create & maintain simple materials using the provided shading templates
  8. Create & maintain custom hero materials and shading networks when necessary
  9. Deep understanding of real-world materials
  10. Perform shot Look Dev tasks
  11. Understanding of energy conservation principles
  12. Deep understanding of Physically based rendering and shader models
  13. Ability to work and communicate with model, texture and groom artists to get the best possible results
  14. Ability to build and maintain complex shading networks with artist usability and user-interface support in mind

What We’re Looking For:

  1. Degree and/or professional training in Computer Graphics, with advanced work experience in VFX or Feature Animation
  2. Exhibits excellent listening and communication skills, able to receive direction and criticism
  3. Demonstrates the ability to help and teach more junior-level artists
  4. Demonstrates the ability to prioritize tasks, manage time very well, provide everyone with accurate time estimates on shot task completion
  5. Demonstrates the ability to work within a team environment
  6. Demonstrates the ability to work with minimal supervision to complete an asset
  7. A thorough knowledge of the VFX pipeline from modeling through texturing, grooming, rendering, and compositing
  8. Ability to pick up new techniques and the ability to learn new software quickly and easily
  9. Knowledge of Katana and Renderman is beneficial
  10. Knowledge of Python is beneficial
  11. Strong interest in shading technologies
  12. At ease with Linux-based operating systems
  13. Good understanding of physically plausible shading techniques

The hiring range for this position in Vancouver is C$108,400 to C$138,800 per year based on a 40-hour workweek. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on business needs. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A full range of medical, financial, and/or other variable pay or benefits may be offered dependent on the level and position offered.
