Detailed Overview:
Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team and is responsible for the assessment/evaluation, treatment, education and management of patients/residents requiring occupational therapy treatment.
Delegates components of treatment to assistants/aides.
Responsibilities:
Provides initial and ongoing functional cognitive and perceptual assessments of patients/residents.
Performs initial and ongoing assessment of patients/residents; implements and evaluates therapeutic interventions as appropriate, based on patient/resident needs.
Develops and facilitates ongoing occupational therapy interventions for patients/residents that may be implemented by other staff members.
Communicates to team members relevant information such as resident’s progress/response to treatments to assist with ongoing care planning.
Delegates components of treatment to assistants/aides by instructing, observing and monitoring treatment provided to ensure quality patient/resident care. Provides input to the manager for the performance evaluation of assistants/aides.
Completes documentation in patient/resident health records following established facility policies.
Participates in program and regional meetings as required; develops and maintains working relations with outside agencies.
Participates in quality improvement and risk management activities, including evaluation of written procedures and standards, development of assessment forms, educational materials, program descriptions, and equipment.
Provides orientation, direction, supervision and evaluation to assigned students and volunteers as required.
Prepares and delivers in-services on subjects related to Occupational Therapy such as new equipment.
Ensures equipment is safe and in good working order.
Provides input to the manager for the purchase of supplies, equipment and repair of equipment, as required.
Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
Baccalaureate degree in Occupational Therapy.
Current full registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of BC (COTBC). Eligible for membership in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists – British Columbia (CAOT – BC).
Two (2) years’ recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to deal with other effectively.
Ability to plan and implement rehabilitation programs for facility residents.
Ability to organize workload and work with minimum supervision.
Knowledge and understanding of philosophy of Long Term Care.
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
