Herzing College is seeking qualified and experienced community service professionals to join our faculty team as Instructors in the Community Services Worker program. This position is well suited to individuals with strong frontline or clinical experience who are committed to applied learning and the preparation of students for entry-level roles in community services, mental health, addictions, and social support settings.


Position Summary

The Instructor is responsible for delivering curriculum aligned with contemporary community services practice, mental health and addictions frameworks, and ethical standards of professional conduct. Instruction is delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning, with a strong emphasis on applied skills, case-based learning, simulations, and reflective practice.


Faculty teach one or more courses within the program, which may include topics such as mental health, addictions, peer support and harm reduction, outreach and intake, documentation, applied psychology, cultural diversity and Indigenous issues, community services in Canada, and professional skills for service workers.


Required Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must demonstrate the following:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of recent professional experience in community services, mental health, addictions, social services, counselling, outreach, or a closely related field.
  • Practical experience supporting individuals facing mental health challenges, substance use, trauma, poverty, or systemic barriers.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and harm reduction approaches.
  • A strong understanding of professional ethics, confidentiality, boundaries, and documentation standards in community service settings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills suitable for instructional delivery, facilitation, and constructive student feedback.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet academic deadlines and maintain accurate records.
  • A high degree of professionalism, empathy, and commitment to inclusive and respectful practice.


Preferred Assets

  • A completed degree or diploma in Social Work, Community Services, Psychology, Counselling, Addictions, or a related discipline.
  • Registration with, or eligibility for, a relevant professional body (where applicable).
  • Previous teaching, training, supervision, or mentoring experience, particularly with adult learners.
  • Experience delivering instruction in an online or blended learning environment.
  • Familiarity with a Learning Management System (Moodle preferred).
  • Experience facilitating simulations, role plays, or case-based learning activities.


Instructional Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver course content aligned with the Community Services Worker curriculum and learning outcomes.
  • Facilitate weekly live sessions, applied activities, simulations, and discussions to support skill development and professional readiness.
  • Provide timely, formative, and summative feedback on assignments, projects, and assessments.
  • Evaluate student work fairly and consistently in accordance with course requirements and institutional policies.
  • Support student engagement, professionalism, and academic success through clear communication and availability.
  • Maintain accurate academic records and comply with all institutional policies and instructional standards.
  • Participate in curriculum development through the relevant Curriculum Committee.
